Premature Greying (White Hair)

The hair has a tendency to lose its natural colour with advancing age and turn grey, but premature greying is morbid condition and it makes even the young look older.

white hair at early age is generally genetically determent or it can be because of underlying disease or deficiency factor.

What is Premature Graying

When some people start to grey in their early 20’s and 30’s, this is called premature graying .Initially hair is white. The cells in our hair follicles called “Melanocytes” generate pigments the main one being melanin. This gives our hair its “color” .The more the melanin presents, the darker the hair color, the less melanin, the lighter the hair color. As you grow older, the production of your color pigment slows down and grey hair begins to appear. 

Symptoms

The main symptom of graying of hair is lack of regular thicker being allowed to grow. Loss of hair color before 35 is termed premature graying. In turn, thinner grey hairs have a chance to grow sooner and more rapidly than normal. 
 

Causes

  • Heredity is a prime predisposing factor.
  • A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature graying of hair..
  • A vitamin B-12 deficiency or problems with the pituitary or thyroid glands can cause premature graying that’s reversible if the problem is corrected.
  • Deficiency of folic acid is what causes gray hair in some instances. Folic acid promotes healthy hair, skin and nails due to its role in synthesis of protein and cell growth, and lack of folic acid can lead to premature grey hair. .
  • Manganese deficiency may also be one of the causes of grey hair, due to its importance in enzyme activation. Lack of manganese can adversely affect many bio-chemical processes in the body and lead to loss of hair color and premature grey. .
  • Copper deficiency may possibly be what causes grey hair in some cases. Copper is needed for the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin and hair its color .A lack of copper can result in loss of skin or hair color, leading to premature graying.
  • Lack of the B vitamins, iron, copper and iodine in the daily diet is said to be contributory factor.
  • Mental worries produce extraordinary tension in the skin of the scalp; this interferes with the supply of vital nutrition necessary for the health of the hair.
  • Other causes are medical skin condition or a trauma to a scalp.
Treatment

Proper Diet-The role of proper diet is preventing and arresting premature graying of hair is very important. .

-Eating lots of fruits and vegetables are absolutely essential to facilitate the supply of essential vitamins and minerals. . 

Daily wash from Shampoo- For daily washes; use a shampoo that is mild, gentle and moisturizing. Don’t use too much of conditioner.

High folic acid foods- High folic acid foods that may help in preventing grey hair or reverse grey hair caused include- legumes ( peas and dried beans such as black beans , cranberry beans , chickpeas , kidney beans, lentils , moong beans ) , dark green leafy vegetable including asparagus, beets , broccoli, cauliflower, parsley , mustard greens , spinach , turnip greens. . 

Rich Food- Food rich in manganese that may help in preventing grey hair or to stop grey hair formation include – dark green leafy vegetables ( broccoli, kale , chard, mustard greens , lettuce , spinach ) avocadoes , pineapple , raspberries , nuts ( almonds , peanuts, pecans, walnuts) . 

Copper rich foods- Copper rich foods that may help in preventing grey hair , and reverse grey hair causes include- cashew nuts – dried beans like soya bean , chick peas , lentils , lima , mushrooms and sesame seeds.
